About the National Health Insurance Authority

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) commenced in August 2005 in accordance with Act 35 of the 1999 constitution to provide comprehensive healthcare delivery at affordable cost. Various programswere designed to cover all categories of persons; Civil Servants, organised private sector, armed forces, police and allied services, tertiary institutions, voluntary contributors, persons in Diaspora, self employed, rural communities, prison inmates, children under five and permanently disables persons.

All About TISHIP

Tertiary Institution social Health insurance programme is a social security system whereby the health care of students in tertiary institutions is being paid for from funds created by pooling the contributions of students. The programme is committed to ensuring access to qualitative healthcare service for students of tertiary institutions thereby promoting the health of students with a view to creating conducive learning environment. Extensive evidence is now available to demonstrate the link between health, as well as school health programmes to academic achievement.

Levels of Healthcare

A network of reliable and standard clinics, hospitals, laboraties, pharmacies located nationwide ensures that members have access to quality healhcare whenever they maybe located.  Healthcare services will be provided through a three level of service arrangement. These are primary, secondary and tertiary level services. 

Primary Healthcare Providers

These refer to the entry point and point of first contact of individuals with the healthcare providers. They serve as the gatekeepers to the scheme. They provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

Secondary Healthcare Providers

Offer specialized services to patients referred from the primary healthcare providers through the HMOs. Occassionally, particularly in cases of emergencies, direct referrals without recourse to the HMOs can be made. However, the HMOs must be notified immediately after.

Tertiary Healthcare Services

These consist of highly specialized services based on referral from the scondary care level through the HMOs
